Rusty is a sweet 15.2h Grade gelding, estimated to be in his mid to late-teens, seeking a homes as a riding horse or companion. His build makes us think Quarter Horse-type, and his roaned coat and striped hooves make us think Appaloosa. But we have no registration info to confirm. Rusty was purchased from a kill pen in Louisiana in March of 2020. Since then he has been used by both adults and older children to groom and ride, at the walk only.
During our visit, Rusty was easy to catch in the field and lead well to the round pen where our appointment took place. He ground tied for grooming and picking up all four feet with no issues other than some slight wiggles, mainly to see if his owner had any treats hidden in her pockets! He was ridden bareback with a halter and lead rope during our appointment. He stood well at the mounting block, but did walk off as soon as his owner was on his back. He was not ridden long at the walk before his owner dismounted, which he handled well. We did not see him ridden with any tack or at any speed beyond a walk.
Rusty makes a good pleasure/trail riding prospect. Rusty’s owner states that he’d be suited for an intermediate level rider, which we cannot verify due to the short amount of time we saw him ridden. However, we can say that he showed no indication of misbehavior while we observed him with a rider. We would suggest that he either go to a confident rider with experience, or a lower level rider with a trainer, until his under saddle behavior can be better confirmed.
Rusty is UTD on shots, Coggins, teeth and deworming. He was due for a trim upon our visit in early November. Rusty is good in stalls, loads, sprays and ties. He has been turned out with both mares and geldings, and tends to take on a more dominant role within the herd. He is also barefoot and an easy-keepers, so he’d also make an excellent companion horse.
