Additional Information

Liberal Spin, aka James, is a 2010, 16h registered Thoroughbred gelding seeking a new home with an advanced rider who can continue to bring him to his full potential. James retired from the track in 2018 after winning over $150,000 during his career. After retiring, James was used for jumping before his current owner took him on over one year ago.

Soon after taking ownership of James, it was noted that he seemed uncomfortable through the topline and he was diagnosed through x-ray with kissing spine. Despite his diagnosis, James has continued to be able to be ridden with the help of a custom-fit saddle, proper conditioning to strengthen his topline, a couple injections and acupuncture. As a result of these efforts, James is doing well under saddle walk/trot and is starting to get the hang of carrying himself correctly at the canter. He has been primarily ridden in the ring, but has also been taken out for ventures around the property.

James will need someone with the confidence and experience to continue bringing him along in his training. He would be best suited for a career mostly on the flat, but may be able to pop over a small jump every now and then. Low level dressage, pleasure and/or trail would be ideal for this guy. James is super smart and loves to work. He takes pride in getting something right and responds well to positive reinforcement. His owner praises him for being able to pick up on things easily and not having to re-teach him a skill once he understands it. James needs a job and would do best with someone looking to ride on a regular basis to keep his mind occupied.

James is UTD on everything and ready to go. He’s currently wearing front shoes, but may be able to go barefoot depending on his workload and terrain he’d be living/working on. He tends to be on the higher end of the pecking order within his herd. His owner is only aware of him being housed with geldings, but he is turned out next to a mare currently. He can get a little infatuated with her when she’s in season, so he may do best with geldings only moving forward. He is good in a stall, stands for the vet and farrier, bathes and sprays without issue. He is a moderate keeper and receives 4lb total of feed, plus oil.

James’ price is negotiable to the perfect home and includes his sheet and oil. If you think James could be the horse for you, let us know!
